Myrtus communis L. (Myrtaceae), a medicinal and aromatic species, is an aromatic evergreen perennial shrub or small tree, 1.8-2.4m in height with small foliage and deep fissured bark. It is native to Southern Europe, North Africa and West Asia. It is distributed in south, north, and central parts of Iran. Myrtle has evergreen leaves 2–5 cm long and becomes fragrant after crushing, and these leaves are highly bitter due to astringency. The fowers of the myrtle plant are stellar, white or pink, and very fragrant. The round blueberry fruit of this plant contains several seeds. Myrtle fruit has a unique taste and could be in two diferent colors, black or white. The dark blue fruit of this plant mainly contains polyphenolic compounds and shows high antioxidant activity.
in ancient medical traditions, different parts of myrtle, in particular berries, leaves, flowers, and essential oils, have been extensively used as a remedy for treating cough, gastrointestinal disorders (i.e., pep-tic ulcers, diarrhea, and hemorrhoids), urinary diseases (i.e., urethri- tis), and skin ailments (i.e., reddened skin), as well as for inactivating microorganisms and for the wound healing.
